REAL ID or Real Problem? Why Your Next Flight Could Be a Road Trip

REAL ID or Real Problem? Why Your Next Flight Could Be a Road Trip

The Star-Studded Saga of Domestic Travel

After nearly two decades of delays, debates, and DMV drama, the REAL ID requirement has officially taken flight. Beginning today, May 7, 2025, U.S. travelers aged 18 and over will need a REAL ID-compliant license—or an acceptable alternative (passport,) to board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities.

What Exactly Is a REAL ID?

Think of the REAL ID as your golden ticket to the skies. It’s a state-issued driver’s license or ID card that meets federal security standards established by the REAL ID Act of 2005, a post-9/11 measure aimed at enhancing national security. You’ll recognize it by a star (or, in some states, a flag) emblazoned on the upper portion of the card.

How to Get One Without Losing Your Sanity

Acquiring a REAL ID isn’t as simple as flashing a smile at the DMV camera. You’ll need to present:

  • Proof of identity (e.g., a U.S. birth certificate or passport)
  • Proof of Social Security number (e.g., Social Security card or W-2 form)
  • Two proofs of address (e.g., utility bills or bank statements)
  • Proof of lawful status in the U.S.

Make sure to check with your state’s DMV for specific requirements and to schedule an appointment!

Wait, My Passport Still Works, Right?

Absolutely. If you possess a valid U.S. passport, military ID, or a DHS trusted traveler card like Global Entry, you’re cleared for takeoff. These documents are acceptable alternatives to a REAL ID for domestic flights

State of the States: Who’s Ready and Who’s Not

While the federal deadline is here, not all states are soaring at the same altitude regarding REAL ID compliance. Some states, like Texas, have widely issued compliant IDs, while others, such as Pennsylvania, have lower opt-in rates.

A recent CBS News analysis found that at least 17 states are less than 50% compliant with the REAL ID law, despite having nearly 20 years to prepare. This means that millions of Americans could encounter travel disruptions if they lack the appropriate identification.

Additionally, if you are from one on the 5 states that are exempt, different rules apply!

Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington offer an alternative option called an “Enhanced Driver’s License,” which allows residents to bypass the Real ID requirements.

If you reside in one of these five states, be sure to click on your state’s name to review its specific requirements.

Turbulence Ahead: Potential Delays and Glitches

Recent reports indicate that TSA scanners at various airports across the country have encountered difficulties reading newly issued REAL ID cards, resulting in manual checks and delays of up to 40 minutes.

While the TSA is working on system upgrades, it is advisable to arrive early and carry an alternative form of identification.

Final Boarding Call

The era of the REAL ID is upon us. To ensure your travel plans don’t get grounded:

  • Check if your current ID is REAL ID-compliant (look for that star!)
  • If not, consider obtaining a REAL ID or ensure you have an acceptable alternative
  • Schedule a DMV appointment promptly, as slots may fill up quickly
  • Visit the DHS REAL ID page for more information

Safe travels, and may your journey be as smooth as your TSA screening!
