Opened in early 2023, the land is a vibrant tribute to Nintendo’s beloved characters and games. The space features an attraction like no other, interactive zones, and themed dining. All of this in an environment that mimics the game’s colorful, pixelated aesthetic.

Over the Top Theming
From the moment my family and I stepped into Super Nintendo World, it was clear that attention to detail! Guests enter through a Warp Pipe, emerging into the bustling world of the Mushroom Kingdom.
It’s hard to miss the land is dominated by the sight of Peach’s Castle and Bowser’s Castle! The towering structures add to the atmosphere and bring a sense of adventure.
The design mimics the 3D platforming elements of the Super Mario games. There’s spinning coins, moving characters, and interactive spaces around every corner. My son, a huge fan of gaming, recognized the iconic elements. You’ll see Question Blocks, Goombas, and Piranha Plants, all of which are cleverly incorporated into the scenery. It makes for an incredible photo backdrop.
Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge
However, the centerpiece of Super Nintendo World is undoubtedly Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge ride! This attraction is an augmented reality (AR) experience full of the excitement of Mario Kart’s zany world.
Guests are provided with AR headsets that bring familiar Mario characters into the track as they race through the Mushroom Kingdom. Even my husband and I were dodging hazards and throwing virtual shells at competitors. We didn’t know what we were doing but it was still a whole lot of fun!
Interactive Fun with Power-Up Bands
One of the most unique features of Super Nintendo World is the interactive gameplay experience provided through the Power-Up Bands. These wearable bands allow guests to join in real-world challenges scattered around the land. Give those blocks a Punch to collect virtual coins or battling enemies in mini games.
The bands sync with the official Universal Studios app, and players can track their progress and compete with others. The feature adds replay ability and fun for those looking to fully immerse themselves.
This interactivity sets Super Nintendo World apart from other themed lands, offering a sense of adventure and competition that’s more than just passive entertainment.
Dining and Merchandising
The Toadstool Café is the area’s primary dining. The menu is filled with themed dishes like a “Mario Burger” and “Super Mushroom Soup.” The food is not only fun but also surprisingly good, with options that cater to both adventurous and picky eaters.
As expected, Super Nintendo World is also a gold mine for merchandise collectors. The 1-Up Factory offers exclusive Nintendo-themed souvenirs ranging from plush toys and apparel to collectible pins. Every corner of the shop is stocked with nods to the games, making it a must-visit for die-hard fans.
Room for Improvement
While Super Nintendo World excels in thematic immersion and interactivity, the space can feel somewhat cramped, especially during peak hours. The land’s compact size means that crowds can quickly build, which can detract from the experience. However, we purchased early entry for our day at the park ($20/pp). We were able to enjoy the space fully before the park opened to the public.
Additionally, while Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge is a fantastic anchor ride, some might find the land lacking in variety when compared to larger themed areas like The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Expanding the roster of attractions in the future could elevate the experience even further.

Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood is amazingly themed and a “must-do” for Nintendo fans and theme park enthusiasts alike. Universal Studios destinations up their game with its meticulous attention to detail, innovative interactivity, and nostalgic nods to the beloved video game. While the space and ride offerings could be expanded, the existing attractions and experiences offer plenty of excitement and entertainment for visitors of all ages.
For anyone who has ever dreamed of stepping into a Mario game, this land is a magical, game-changing adventure. Even better, this land will open with the new Epic Universe at Universal Orlando Resort in 2025 along with brand new hotels and resorts.
